Synopsis

Album Description
"The live recording of Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band All Night Flight taken from a 1968 concert titled "Purple Modal Strobe Ecstasy with the Daughters of Destruction" is the perfect trigger for what anthropologist Jean Rouch called 'The Strange Mechanism,' the trance state which most of this decade's electronic music aspires to induce. The immediacy and the spectral filigree--the dervishes summoned during Riley's nocturnal concert--have been faithfully preserved on this CD."--Richard Henderson, The Wire

CD Reviews

Minimalist masterpiece takes flight.
04/11/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Adventurous fans of experimental 20th-century music and sound collage may already be familiar with fragments of this work from David Toop's OCEAN OF SOUND collection (Virgin 1996). Here, the Cortical Foundation provides the original program in its entirety-- a mesmerizing, flowing early all-night performance of Riley's canonical "Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band" piece, as intended in its original concert form. The studio version's ominous, undulating soundscape is preserved and expanded upon in manifold ways here-- anyone who is a fan of the original, or of early Minimalist music in general, must investigate."
A trippy masterpiece

"If you're a fan of late 60s Terry Riley and A Rainbow in Curved Air, this one's for you. It's a representative slice of Riley's all-night performances: melodic, dreamy, lilting, pulsating, and innovative. Surrender to its charms and imagine what it must have been like to get appropriately "prepared" and absorb this groove for 6 or 8 hours."
Not indispensable

"This CD contains a live performance of "Poppy Nogood and his Phantom Band" also appearing on "Rainbow in a curved air".

Excellent and long as the performance is (young Riley is already at the peak of his powers), it isn't sufficiently different to warrant the purchase of the CD unless, like me, you are a confirmed Riley junkie.
