Generosity of Spirit
Mitch Bogen | Somerville, Massachusetts | 09/14/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Try as you might, you can't always escape the inane presence of Britney et al. But there is an antidote to be had. Slip this CD in the player and discover everything that's missing from what passes for popular music today. Hint: it has something to do with depth, wisdom, spirituality, musicality, and generosity of spirit. Indeed, listening to Terry Callier is a healing experience.Callier creates a unique soul music, combining his own acoustic guitar and pliant vocals with more traditional jazz-based instrumentation. My favorite cut is Java Sparrow, an extended metaphor about the spiritual nature of human life, and the yearning for freedom from this material world. The final track features the tortured yet joyous cry of Pharoah Sanders' tenor sax, playing off another searching Callier vocal. TimePeace is the sound of an artist who ponders the highest aspects of life."
4.5 stars: I guess the '90s weren't all THAT bad musically..

"BUT WHY DID THIS ALBUM GO OUT-OF-PRINT!?!?!? Oh brother, THAT'S when you know good music just isn't in high demand these days. If you haven't gotten this one yet, do what I did: SCOUR THE USED CD/CLEARANCE BINS EVERYWHERE YOU GO!!! It's bad enough Terry Callier got slept on back in the day and even this time there's no exception. His unique blend of soul, folk, jazz, and blues is as timeless as it gets (not to mention having one of the most distinct singing voices around; he still sounds incredible for a man already pushing 60!).

Geez, my generation is currently being dumbed down by the onslaught of major labels constantly pushing bad music instead of being turned on to more artists like this guy. I only pray it's not too late to remedy what has become a VERY serious problem in recent years..."
Sublimely beautiful - music to heal the soul

"I was lucky enough to find a copy of this CD recently, and I agree with every word of Mitch Bogan's comment - it is sublimely beautiful, soaring, spiritual, uplifting and healing music. It is a crying shame to see this exceptional CD out of print. I can't understand why Terry Callier isn't a household name on both sides of the Atlantic - with the voice and heart of an angel, he certainly deserves to be. If you like folk, jazz, soul - or any kind of beautiful music! - then I implore you to track down a copy of this CD, and spread the word. "In brightest day or darkest night / Don't give up the faith / Keep your heart right... Keep your heart right.""
