"The Nielsen Violin Concerto is certainly not an easy piece to bring off. It can sound quite discursive. In this performance by the composer's son-in-law, Emil Telmanyi, the work sounds completely engaging. Episodes are full of atmosphere and rare sensibility. Helping matters immeasurably is a fine accompaniment by The Royal Danish Orchestra under its Italian conductor, Egisto Tango. They also contribute to this CD a rarified version of Nielsen's orchestral work, A Saga Dream. The Clarinet Concerto has become somewhat more familiar in recent years. Benny Goodman recorded it, but I prefer this version by Louis Cahuzac. He plays with a light but full tone, and has total mastery of the involved language of the piece. The conductor is John Frandsen, then in his 20's, and he contributes a pointed accompaniment with some occasionally loose ensemble. Throughout the CD, the sound obtained from the 78s is very good and full, with a minimum of surface noise. All Carl Nielsen fans will want this disc."
