CD Reviews

Excellent Remastering On DVD | Fair Remastering On CD
Jason W. Bellenger | Byron Center, Michigan, USA | 03/26/2005
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Ah yes, another Tears For Fears compilation. This time Universal decided to give the guys a nice 'Deluxe Sound + Vision' package. Instead of giving the 2 CDs in this package a fresh, updated remastering Univeral has decided to go the cheap way (again) and throw some random masters on there - some of which are poor to fair and others which are good to excellent. This is most evident on disc 1 in which the 'Seeds Of Love' tracks sound much clearer than the earlier tracks. However, when I throw in disc 2 it's a different story. "Memories Fade" - the first track on the disc - sounds bright and crisp - and it's from 1983! What happened here? An accidental mix-up of good masters in favor of bad ones in this case?

The DVD, on the other hand, is excellent! It features not only a remastered soundtrack but also DTS 5.1 audio (which I haven't had the chance to experience yet). Nonetheless, the original stereo mix sounds fantastic. I'm just wondering why Univeral didn't bother to apply this same mix to the CD versions. I guess they just wanted to take the cheap way out yet again.

Overall, I'll be generous and give it a solid 3-star rating, mainly for the DVD. I just wish more care was given to the audio on the CDs. Perhaps on the next reissue?"
