CD Reviews

Jaurena Makes Everyone Love the Tango!
Grady Harp | Los Angeles, CA United States | 02/12/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"For those who treasure the Tango and the music it inspires despite the passage of time and trends this excellent recording is as fine as any around. Raul Jaurena is a highly respected bandoneon artist from Uruguay who has committed his musical life to perpetuating the passion of his youth - the tango. One of the early proponents of Astor Piazzolla's compositions, he went on to compose his own responses to the tango infection and this CD represents a heady group of his compositions.

With Jaurena playing the bandoneon the sound is truly authentic. For the fourteen compositions on this recording he is joined by Octavo Runetti, piano, and the Quinteto Sinopus (Uruguay) composed of Alejandra Moreira and Lya Perez, violins, Stella Maris Gonzalez, viola, Lucrecia Basaldua, cello, and Sergio Mouro, bass. The ensemble sound they produce is tightly woven, passionate, and inspires thoughts of the atmosphere of the tango parlors of Buenos Aires. On four of the songs Marga Mitchell serves as vocal soloist and she has all the brazen and weepy beauty the lyrics require.

This is tango music as true to the spirit of the dance as any this listener has heard. It is a treasure of an album and is a credit to Raul Jaurena's gifts not only as an instrumentalist, but as an arranger and musical director as well. Grady Harp, February 07"
