Disappointing, and pale compared with the 1960 recording

"This recording of Tchaikovsky's Symphony 6, "Pathetique" by Eugene Ormandy (1899-1985) and the Philadelphia Orchestra is really disappointing compared with the 1960 recording by these forces on Sony Essential Classics. Ormandy's conducting is slow, but intensity is lacking, and the Philadelphia strings, still beautiful and powerful in 1981 when this was made, seem to be on auto-pilot when this was recorded: just going through the motions; same old, same old...; been there, done that.
Ormandy recorded Tchaikovsky's famous B minor Symphony 4 times: in 1937 (now released on Biddulph, but maybe hard to find);
in 1960 (Sony Essential Classics - the best recording); in 1969 (RCA, quite good, but not as good as the Sony), and this Delos in 1981. The 1960 is the best, as Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra were in peak condition, and Ormandy at 60 was still youthful enough to move tempos along, but had the maturity to turn in a great recording of Tchaikovsky's "Pathetique".
Some listeners may have loyalties to other recordings. Bernstein/New York (Sony, 1964); Munch/Boston (RCA); Monteux/Boston (RCA); Bohm/London Symphony (DG LP, never on CD in the US or Europe); Wit/Polish National Orchestra (Naxos) are all very fine, if you prefer any of these conductors over Ormandy. But pass on this Delos Ormandy."
