"For years I have enjoyed the Penguin Classics disc of Ansermet's Tchaikovsky ballet highlights, but with Australian Decca Eloquence finally reissuing all three of his complete accounts, it was time for an upgrade. (To be fair, the whole Swan Lake has been available before as a Double Decca title.) Overall, I have been pleased to finally hear these performances, but must agree with reviewers of Tchaikovsky: Sleeping Beauty that the golden age stereo sound normally associated and prized in Ansermet/OSR recordings falls flat, and often sounds like good mono. In fact, mono is what you get from this two-fer's bonus tracks -- the 1953 Rococo Variations with soloist Maurice Gendron (previously released on Maurice Gendron Plays Tchaikovsky & Schumann) and the 1956 6th Symphony, both very enjoyable. One last thing worth mentioning, the booklets of these latest releases have taken a page from the Original Masters box sets and now contain facsimiles of the original LP album covers -- nice touch! But a note to Decca/Universal, let's remember whose still buying classical CDs these days, connoisseurs with discerning ears. Please make sure your product is remastered properly and with style."
