CD Reviews

Pricy but good

(5 out of 5 stars)

"First: Please don't tell my wife that I have just spend USD 31 for only one CD with only 45:34 mintues playtime of a 46 year old performance...!Quite amazing actually how the engineers from JVC have "restored" this classic 1957 recording of the Chicago Symphony during the glorious Reiner days. A very refined recording, and a very classy and refined performance by FR and the CSO. Smooth, lean and crisp, very comparable to the style of their european counterpart of those days, HvK and the BPO. Still by far, this is the fiercest and most emotional account I have ever heard, and the later vK recordings can not follow this one. I love FR's tempi, especially in the allegro molto vivace, where he drives the CSO to a breathtaking, but not hectical (like vK!), march-like ecstatic frenzy never encountered before or since. Enjoy! The music itself is so well known, I stay away from any further comments.Pricy, but good. Liner notes could have been in English, though. For fans and crazy-minded like myself, of course, an absolute must."
