Before the Tannahill Weavers reintroduced the Highland bagpipes to Scottish folk music in the early '70s, the distinctive skirl was pretty much heard only in marching bands and at funerals. On Alchemy, their 13th album, the Weavers continue to demonstrate that the pipes were made for more than just military music and "Amazing Grace." They use it as the main instrument on their medleys of Scottish dance tunes such as "The Wagtail Set" and "The Silver Whistle Set," and as a backdrop for the band's stunning vocals. As on their previous recordings, the Tannahill Weavers skillfully blend the rural tradition of wild Highland flings and reels with the more polite, and urban, Lowland song tradition. And when they sing their stirring harmonies on "It Was All for Our Rightful King" and "The Gallant Shearers" and play their relentlessly rhythmic dance-tune sets, they are continuing their own personal tradition of recording some of the finest Scottish folk music ever heard. --Michael Simmons

The Best Yet!
02/03/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Happily, we've moved beyond the sad, sentimental songs about the Highlands of long ago. For several years we've had a wonderful group of musicians to bring us traditional Scottish folk music at its best -- the Tannahill Weavers. They are the best of the best in Scottish folk music. This is the finest of their many recordings. They just keep getting better and this CD is proof positive. As someone who listens to a lot of Scottish folk music, I can tell you that you will not be disappointed in this recording."

One of My Favorite Celtic albums

"I was looking for some good celtic albums to add to my collection. Little did I know that when I came across this, I was about to sample one of the best celtic albums EVER! I love the fiddle in the opening "The Fair Maid Of Oban Set," and the beautiful "Malley Leigh." This is simply good, foot stomping celtic music, the kind that I really like. I highly recommend this as one of the first cds you should buy when looking for celtic music."
