A monk of sound

"Carl Schuricht is certainly one of the greatests directors of the XX century - and, still today, one of the most underrated ones. His sound precision, strongly rythmical interpretation, the shape of each detail and the extreme coeherence of any work he conducts is one of mankind's biggest unknown secrets. This version of Bruckner's Ninth (with a acceptable sound) is not his greatest (the recording with the VPO is tremendous, full of pathos), but the great conductor can redifine completely the vision of this work. He explores the tension through the vigourous and marked tempi, with a perfection of sound (especially in the strings and metals), and with velocity. The main achievement is the "Scherzo", that almost seams a Mendelssohnian nightmare. His monacal appearance is coeherent with his style of interpretation: Carl Schuricht goes to the heart of the score, exploring its most deep fear (our most big fear): the quickness of our existence's time."
