A Surprizingly Lucid and Gripping Performance

"I bought this CD on a whim, basically because I had been dissatisfied with the sound of other Shostakovich 5th's I had heard lately (especially with musicians distractingly gasping for breath) or possibly with myself, because I was alway waiting for the big climactic moments without being really satisfied by them. Ormandy's recording is surprizing to me because big climaxes are not what jump out of the performance, but rather a clarity of structure and sound, compounded with irony and pathos, all of which has me literally hanging on every note and wondering, "Why did I never notice this or that before?" The symphony is coupled with Prokofiev's "Love For Three Oranges Suite" which is good enough I suppose. But then, what piece of music do you really WANT to hear immediately AFTER the 5th? It's a tough piece to follow!"
Impresionante
