""Emotion...life or lifeless." These were the words of Leopold Stokowski in his last interview, with Dan Rather when the Maestro was 95...I made a study of this work...sometimes called the Church Symphony or Tragic...and Jarvi has no clue what is going on...at the critical moment in the first movement where the flute/clarinet magically sings a slow, flowing rhapsody, answered by the orchestra, Jarvi rushes through it like he's late for a plane...Furtwangler, who takes about the same time, is much more tender...and as the strings answer the soloist Jarvi's play the notes but not the music...much better is Sinopoli, my favorite, or Thielemann or Wand."
