"This live performance form the Proms of the Shostakovich Sym. 13 is one of a kind, and very fine. Sinaisky conducts the symphony without refinement, as a gritty anti-Stalinist cry. The chorus is a bit recessed, but that's a small matter. The spirit of the piece seems totally galvanized here, and using a lighter bass-baritone, Sergei Leiferkus, in place of the usual rich Russian basso pays off. Leiferkus has a gritty, gargly voice that delivers the satire and rage of the poetry with great directness. This goes to the top of my list for this piece, the greatest protest symphony of the century"
