"The only reason I'm writing this review is because it took me so long to find a recording of Gorchakov's orchestral arrangement of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and I'm hoping this review will help future Googlers find this one. It's the only one I know of on CD.
Ravel's arrangement of Pictures is brilliant, but Gorchakov's interpretation sounds more Russian to me. It's a bit darker, less ornate perhaps, yet I find it to be a bit more gripping emotionally than the lighter Ravel version. For me they are both indispensable and as a fan of the piano work, I find the differences in the orchestral interpretations fascinating."
