CD Reviews

Great Bruckner, Great Bargain
Sturgis | Albuquerque, NM | 12/12/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is as good an all around set of Bruckner symphonies as I have encountered in nearly fifty years of following different interpretations. What it lacks in the luminous transparency that Solti was able to get out of the Chicago Symphony or Karajan's superb precision, this conductor and group, neither of who I have ever hear of before, make up for in sheer mass and momentum (which to me is what Bruckner is all about). Roberto Paternostro modulates effortlessly from majestic to lyrical and carries his ensemble over the bottomless chasms and discontinuities which are so integral to Bruckner's style. And at this price! What more could one ask?"
Complete Bruckner Symphonies
Mark R. Peterson | 03/14/2010
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This box collects all live recordings made over the past decade in the magnificent Dom. The performances are quite good, although there is a huge amount of reverberation owing to the size of the venue. This at times contributes to the enjoyment, but more often than not detracts from the clarity of musical lines.

The performances are interesting it that the strings are very noticeable, unlike with many Bruckner recordings where the brass and horns tend to dominate.

For #20 plus shipping this is an excellent way to hear all the wonderful symphonies."
