CD Reviews

Karajan knows his stuff...

"The 7th performance given here is one of the most awe inspired interpretations ever put to record. No conductor can convey the emotion which Herbert von Karajan can in this piece......listen to the trombone solo at the end and your hair will rise on the back of the neck...truly wonderful. The strings in the opening are beutiful...an awe inspired 7th with a tremendous 6. Strange that Sibelius never wrote another note after this for over a 30 year period...Thanks Herbie.."
Due greatness to Caesar...

"Never cared for Karajan. His DG recordings were mostly apalling. All intruments put into a blender, glossy sound with no detail. He did not age well. But he conducted some composers --and some pieces-- better than anyone else. Two composers that come to mind are Richard Strauss and Jean Sibelius.

Karajan had "something" for Sibelius' 6th, no doubt. He recorded it several times and always (except the one for DG!) extraodinarily well. Actually, I would say BEST.

These recordings are superb. The sound is MONO and yet, better than the DG's 60's stereo with the BPO. There is elan, commitment, organic growth in pieces as difficult as the 6th and 7th symphonies are.

"To Caesar his due" then."

"The best all other performances of Sibelius's sixth and seventh symphonies can do is to equal these. It surprises me that there isn't an edition of the score to these with Karajan's markings."
