"One of the most unsung classical ensembles in America today is the Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra. But under the direction of maestra Lucinda Carver, they are gradually becoming one of the nation's premiere chamber orchestras, as can be gauged by this recording of rarely performed Haydn pieces: the overture to his opera "Lo Speziale", and two symphonies--No. 48 ("Maria Theresia"), and No. 43 ("Mercury"). Combining modern technique with period-instrument preciseness, but minus the fussiness of the latter, Carver and the L.A. Mozart Orchestra bring out the best in these lesser-known works by the composer who, along with Mozart, helped to make the symphony the most popular classical music sub-genre of all time. The articulation of the music is crisp, and the tempos are well thought out. A must for anyone looking for the sides of Haydn that rarely get their just due."
