Synopsis

Amazon.com
It looks like Teldec is trying to do Deutsche Grammophon one better in offering the same performances on a bewildering series of differently coupled discs, at all kinds of different prices on various sub-labels. These symphonies are available on a twofer set containing the 38th and 39th symphonies as well, and it's obvious that if you are interested in Nikolaus Harnoncourt's Mozart, that is the one to get. For the record, Harnoncourt's performances are extreme in terms of tempo, and sometimes strange in their phrasing. They make a refreshing change of pace for the already initiated. If you're new to this music, then stick with Szell (Sony), Böhm (DG), or at budget price, Wordsworth on Naxos. --David Hurwitz

CD Reviews

A superb "Jupiter" and "big" G-Minor
03/23/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I must say that this is a revisionist's "Jupiter". The tempos were more-than-appropriate for these late 18th Century works, and the phrasing in many places (particularly the 2nd movement of "Jupiter") shows an incredible attention to detail. The "ombra" moments in "Jupiter's" 2nd movement are haunting, and the treatment of the multi-thematic counterpoint in the final movement is difficult to surpass. It should also be noted that these great musical feats were achieved in a "live" concert recording, unlike many previous "reference" printings, threaded together with studio trickery. This recording is a must-have!--John H. Pritchard"
Everything Harnoncourt does is thouhgt through.

"Here again a prime example of how confronting Mozart`s music can be when performed seriously, with Mozart`s unparallelled genius as a given, and using the means that he had when he wrote. To soem the tempi particularly may seem strange, but Harnoncourt chooses them meticulously, based on the performance practice of the time of Mozart. Read `a musical dialoque`."
