Original instruments and excellent Haydn

"I usually find a Haydn symphony to be a poor second to a Mozart symphony. Not these four! Roy Goodman on harpsichord and conducting the original instruments of the Hanover Band makes this a jewel. The music scores are taken from the original with the correct instruments and tempo. No slowed down boring Menuettos here. No instrument faked `alts' either. The music is quick and lively. The tones are crisp and clear.
Slow movements are usually not to my liking but I guess I am getting older. The opening slow movement to 22nd `Philosopher' is very contemplative and most enjoyable. Usually I am more a `Presto' liker and these Haydn symphonies supply that too. Lastly the 3rd movement Menuetto in 24th always has me checking the CD player because I wonder what that gorgeous number is. It is great period waltz music well suitable to a 18th century ball in a grand castle.
This is an excellent choice for a disk in a collection that, like me, has not discovered the unknown magic of Haydn."
