Great Dvorak; good Schubert

(4 out of 5 stars)
"Carlo Maria Giulini -- though, by temperment, not a "star" -- was one of the half dozen or so greatest conductors of the 20th century, far better than many "star" conductors, such as Rafael Kubelik. Giulini had a particular rapport with the music of Dvorak. He made several outstanding recordings of Dvorak's "New World" Symphony and this recording with the Philharmonia Orchestra in its prime is truly outstanding -- definitely worth five stars. Had the Schubert "Unfinished" Symphony been the superb version recorded by Giulini, I would have assigned five stars to this CD. But, for some reason the superb Giulini "Unfinished" was passed by in favor of a performance conducted by Kubelik which is decent but not on a par with Giulini. Nevertheless, this CD is worth getting for the outstanding Giulini performance of Dvorak's "New World" Symphony."
