Product DescriptionSydney Smith, the leading pianist of the Salon period, was a composer of some 400 works, including transcriptions. Presented here are 5 selections. Three are among his most popular original compositions: Le Jet D'eau, Tarantelle Brillante and Lily of the Valley. Also included are two of his most celebrated transcriptions, Braga's La Serenata and Brillante Fantasia on Maritana (an opera by the Irish composer William Wallace). Smith was born in Dorchester, England in 1839 and died in London in 1889. He studied piano in Leipzig with Moscheles and composition under Reitz. He returned to England in 1858, and in the following year settled in London where he had a considerable reputation as a teacher. His compositions, exclusively for the piano, were as popular on the continent as in England.
