CD Reviews

Sisters with Voices that can blow!
Louis | Houston,TX | 12/16/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Just to get this started SWV is that girl group known for the hit single "Weak" back in 93'. They hit it big with their debut effort "It's About Time", which is a very descent album, but words can't express what I feel for this CD. "A New Beggining" is the groups sophmore album and it is all but pleasing! I mean every single song on the album is playable, no fillers here. SWV was never given the props they needed, Coko can blow her but off and so can the other two girls(LeLee & Jaj). Cokos voice is so sweet and powerful, she could outsing any of the new leads in any girl group and I can say that because I own TLC,Xscape, and Destinys Child albums. Every song on the album fits them to a tee with producers like the "All Stars", Herb Middleton, Brian A. Morgan, Daryl Simmons, and "The Neptunes". I didn't even know Pharrell and Chad were producing back in 96' but check the credits, they are listed. Here's an over view of each song so read on.1.) Intro- A nice little inro to start the album off, lets you know Cokos voice is still in full effect.
2.) Your the one- The first single off the album, it got alot of air play and is a great up-beat track. 9/10
3.)Whatcha need- It's a good R&B song but nothing really new, shes just talking about what she can give her wanna be man. 8/10
4.) On & On- Another up-tempo song, they are really having a good time on this one. Very catchy and fun-9/10
5.) It's all about you- The last up-tempo song on this half of the album. Taj sings lead on this one and does a nice job on. This song had to grow on me after a couple of spins but a very nice song-8/10
6.) Use your Heart- This is my second fav. song on the album. The beat is so chilling and smooth, and so is Cokos voice. The Neptunes produced this track and did a good job doing it.(Was also released as a single)-10/10
7.) Where is the love(Interlude)- This interlude is soooo good I wish it was an actuall song. Their voices blend so well together.8.)Fine Time- This is classic SWV at their best. They sing about being led on in a relationship and everyone can relate to that. 10/10
9.)Love is so Amazin- Another ballad that show cases Cokos voice, a very nice slow song and it does it's justice the whole way through. 10/10
10.) Use your heart(Interlude)- This reminds me of a quiet storm, SWV sings the Chorus of the song very slow. Luv it!
11.) You are my love- Darryl simmons produced this one so you know this is a good love song. Nice melody and chorus. 10/10
12.) Im so in love- This is a mid tempo song and Coko tears the end of this song up. Nice lustful song-9/10
13.) When this feeling- The Neptunes show up again on this one and gives SWV a whole new sound. It's Mid-tempo, another great song-9/10
14.) What's it gonna be- My favorite song on the album. This is classic SWV again, the feel of this song is very sad because it's talking about leaving a straind realtionship. 10/10
15.) That's what I'm Here for- The song is self explanitory, love the background vocals also.9/10
16.) Don't Waste Your Time- Not the best song on the cd but it sounds pretty good. LeLee gets lead finally on this song-8/10
17.) Soul intact( Outro)- Excellent way to end the album (Unity is what we need)."
The Best Of The 3!

"I know some people may find it hard to believe, but SWV only released 3 albums in their all too brief time in the spotlight. Those 3 albums are " It's about Time(First), New Beginning (second and the one you are reviewing now), and Release some Tension (Third). I have all 3 and can discuss each one , but since this is a review for their second album I will keep my comments confined to this one. To me SWV was (and to me still is) one of the most soulful and innovative R&B female groups to come out in a long time. Now some may be saying right now what about TLC? EnVouge? Xscape? Destiny's Child? I'm sorry, the aformentioned are all talented, but they cannot hold a candle to these sistas. Now to the album. If you only had a choice to get one SWV album this is the one to buy. The first one was good but here it's clear they have matured on this one. You can tell from the content and subject matter of the album. They also sound more confident on this album than the first. Production is also tight on this album with the Neptunes (Yes the Neptunes!) Producing 2 tracks, Erick Sermon Producing 1 and the remaining bulk by Allen "Allstar" Gordon who does a superb job.Even though this album is playable from beginning to end without skipping here are some of my favorites.
Standout Tracks:
You're the One
On & On
Use your Heart
Love is so Amazin'
You are my Love
When this FeelingSo don't hesitate, pick this up!"
Great followup cd

"I love SWV. It's a shame they broke up, but they have some of the most amazing voices i've ever head, especially Koko. This cd is a great followup to their stunning debut and is almost a tie with the first one for amazing tracks. I like the first cd just a tiny bit better. The thing i like about this cd the most is that all three girls get time on the mike and we get to hear not just Koko's voice dominating the tracks. I love the gospel harmonies of the opening track "The New Beginning". The ballads are all beautiful and some of them are really heartfelt and others are heartbreaking. I thought the song "On And On" was a better dance track than "You're The One For Me", and should have been a single. This cd is a pure class act all the way through, and if you bought the first cd you need to rush out and get this one. It's equally as good."
