"I will start this review by speaking to those who are fans of Switchfoot's "The Beautiful Letdown." If you thought that album was good, then you will be totally blown away with this new release. I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed with the band's previous studio release, Oh! Gravity. That album was by no means bad, I just felt that they could have done better. With Hello Hurricane, Switchfoot has reinvented themselves and I admit that it's probably by far their best album. This DVD edition is maybe not worth the price to the average listener, but to those who want to dive deeper behind this record's meaning, I highly recommend it. Also, the live in studio music videos are fantastic! Overall, I highly commend Switchfoot for a great release! If you are a new listener, I recommend the regular CD edition of Hello Hurricane. If you are dedicated fan, I recommend this edition."
The reconstruction of deconstructed brilliance!

"Switchfoot is a master of making themselves over to be better than who they were previously. They shed the pretense of the mainstream and focus on the main thing here, which is music itself. Hello Hurricane in its entirity stirs up several emotions from feeling caged in to being free, fills one with hope, looking into the reflection of yourself and the world around you. If you liked their sounds before, you'll surely love this one instantly. Mind you, the album has a different tone- the essence is still there- even more prominent than before. If you've never heard of them, Hello Hurricane is a great place to start your discovery. You're also lucky because you didn't have to wait as long as the rest of us."
Even better than The Beautiful Letdown!

"It might sound like blasphemy to say it, but I'm fairly certain that Hello Hurricane has surpassed The Beautiful Letdown as my favorite Switchfoot CD. The songs are somehow both a return to their pre-Columbia roots (now that they're an independent band) and an illustration of how much they've matured as songwriters and musicians since those days. The DVD included in this edition is a brilliantly executed look into the making of the record - a process that by their own description amounted to the deconstruction and reconstruction of who they are as a band. It boasts beautiful camera work and insightful interviews with the guys. It's clear that they took the freedom gained from leaving the label and used it to the very best advantage, and we their listeners get to reap the rewards.
Hello Hurricane is a record inspired by the times in your life when you're facing storms, be they literal or metaphorical. The title track is paradoxically upbeat, singing into an oncoming storm that it can't silence love. Songs like "Your Love Is A Song," "Sing It Out," and "Always" are amongst the most beautiful songs Jon Foreman has ever written and anchor the meditative side of the album, whilst songs like lead single "Mess of Me," "The Sound (The John M Perkins Blues)," and "Free" provide the driving rock for which Switchfoot are known.
I highly recommend this album - it was precisely the album I needed in my life and I am sure no one would regret bringing it into theirs."
Switchfoot ups the ante

"Why I'm digging it: 1. Music that utterly rocks, like full bore rockers "Mess of Me", "The Sound", and "Bullet Soul". Switchfoot has their own sound and really bring their best here. The bridge with the vocal/guitar lick in "Mess of Me" gives me chills. You can hear the Zeppelin influence there, and in "Sound" also. The first four songs start off "Hurricane" big. "Your Love is a Song" is a favorite, and continues another strength of Switchfoot, and that's the ability to create beautiful, loud, guitar-banging melodies like "I Dare You to Move", "Stars", etc. The title track is in that vein too. Things mellow out a bit on tracks 8, 10, 11, and 12, which give time to breathe a bit. It's amazing--the ability to rock out and then turn around and sing such musically beautiful, mellow songs. 2. Lyrics --An overarching theme is similar to previous releases like "The Beautiful Letdown," the desire we feel as we go through life that despite all our best attempts, we are often still a mess inside and we need more. The frustration of the limits our soul feels in this "shell", comparing it to a "prison cell". With this despair though, there is great hope, faith, and reaching forward to live for something more. The lyrics strike a chord with me and I find myself basically shouting out the first four songs as I blast them out in my truck. Jon Foreman has always had a poetic and visionary view of life and the human condition. When I hear him sing these songs, I believe he is singing out of life experience. You can hear in his voice. It's from deep inside and fits with music in a powerful way. I saw a recent interview with Jon Foreman where he said they wanted to make songs they could die singing (or something like that). It comes through and delivers with big sounds, cutting guitar licks, and relevant lyrics. I hate comparing it to past releases because every album represents a different chapter in a band's "story". That said, I put this up with "The Beautiful Letdown" for strength from first to last song. Anybody that appreciates guitar rock should really like this. Highly recommend."
