CD Reviews

AGAIN ONE OF THEIR BEST !!!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Yes, this release is the ORIGINAL "Desolation Boulevard" the way it meant to be and this is by far better than American version. Better buy this. Everything is correctly said in other reviews. I can only mention that this was the second monster hit by The Sweet along with "Sweet Fanny Adams" (both albums originally released in 1974) and it was their peak hour. This digitally remastered edition released by BMG in Germany in 1999, but again it has no proper booklet ! I have different (American !) release of 1998 (also digitally remastered with 2 bonus tracks) released directly by their publishing company Chinebridge Ltd. with extended booklet containing the original LP artwork with full lyrics inside ! I must say that for the first time ever I have come across here with extended drum solo on a STUDIO album. It is fantastic ! And it is not a filler (as frequently on live recordings)! Please check out their cover of "A Man With A Golden Arm". Mick Tucker was indeed a genuine skin-smasher. Answering to one of American reviewers here I can say that original lead vocalist Brian Connolly had quit by the beginning of 1979, the three remaining members recorded three more albums (ranging from so-so to awful) where Steve Priest and Andy Scott took over on vocals and recruited a new member Gary Moberly on keyboards. They disbanded in 1982 (but not in 1981). In the 90's they re-emerged several times in different incarnations but there are no hopes for original line-up reunion due to Brian Connolly died in April 1997 from a heart-attack."

"Great album, just wanted to note that the acoustic version of Lady Starlight that appears here was re-done on Give Us A Wink but only appeared on the US version, and was re-done in a more heavy style. Likely it was included by the record company, still looking to have Sweet break big in the US."
Consider The Time - '73 are you freakin' kidding me!!!

"In 2004 it seems very long ago in a small village in P.E.I. Canada. I first heard this album when I was a kid, maybe 6 or 7, now I'm 36. My older brother had the LP (as well as 8 track, but if you're under 25yrs. old, nevermind!) in his huge collection. Wow I loved it right away. All of a sudden I new I wanted to play the drums, and did I/do I ever!! For years I'd mention it to friends, as we talked of Zeppelin, Kiss, Priest, Sabbath, Van Halen(the real Halen with Roth, not with Sammy Hag can't sing!!) but no one ever heard of it. How was this possible I thought out loud! To me this was Kiss before Kiss only without the make-up and they where british! Don't hear ir? put on "Into The Night" or "Set Me Free" or even "Sweet F.A." and crank it up! To this day when I listen to the album(CD)I can't help but think, "what happened"? For any of you who remember, this band did some (in my opinion) awful stuff later, i.e. "Love is like Oxygen" BLAAA! No offence to those who perhaps like the later music from Sweet, not everyone will like this album either. I personally did'nt like the later albums. all I can say is for 1973('74 US) This album truly is classic in the hard rock genre. If you've only heard "Fox on the Run" or "Ballroom Blitz" because of radio, to me those are the weaker tracks on this album. The only negative of this album I'm sorry to say,(it kind of reflects the era) is the lyrics are a little sexest i.e. "if she don't spread I'm gonna bust her head..." etc. and understandably my wife hates most of the songs as a result,(she being a singer/writer) hence the four stars as opposed to five I'd like to give on it's music alone. Still, it's a must for any hard rock/classic rock fan or a music lover of all genres, like myself...well with the exception of country & western!! Nuff said! Rock on!"
