Now this is what I'm talking about!!!!

"Just when you thought you didnt need another Richter disc because the hundred plus on your shelf were beginning to make you look kind of insane, along comes the long anticipated complete 1960 carnegie recordings of which we were provided a teaser almost a half decade ago in the Rediscovered series(which provided one of the most steaming renditions of the Prokofiev 6th ever.
These recordings reveal the first stage of Richter-the purely russian phenomon without a cell of the western tradition in his blood. Whatever one may think of the fast beethoven or chopin(I adore this fourth ballade) it is jaw-droppingly virtuosic and compelling. For those who have many Richter discs it is of the utmost interest to hear him at this stage before the audacious tempis and mannerisms set in(though I love that Richter as well). The wealth of material on this set is also quite astounding and though us Richter aficiandos have all of it--we most likely dont have it like this(with the exception of the Richter in the 50's set which is also invaluable now that it is being redistributed). Highly recommended for all and an absolute must for Richter fans."
Wonderful performances, mediocre sound

"Hearing Richter in top form and at a crucial moment in his career is worth the cost of this set. However, the sound is mono, and there is audible LP surface noise -- presumably the label didn't have access to the original tapes. That is the only reason I've docked it a star. Still wonderful. Get "Richter Rediscovered" for different performances from a few months later as well as much better sound."
