CD Reviews

A must have...

"As someone who is pretty much a listening fixture in the New York jazz scene, I can undeniably say that 'Lost In New York' is a great jazz album by an extremely gifted young composer and trumpet player. LINY is packed with energy, originality and enthusiasm for the music being played -- things that are sometimes lost among some of the contemporary, younger musicians. Mr. Singaratnam offers great variety in his compositions, evoking the works of some of the great jazz legends, all the while putting his unique spin on things. Although a few tracks are probably longer than what the average non-jazz listener is used to, anyone who has an open mind will be able to appreciate the creativity and attention to detail in each track. Where Mr. Singaratnam really shines on this album is with his playing of a captivating, sensitive and technically brilliant solo in the beautifully composed "Spring For All But Me". But perhaps my favorite track on the entire album is entitled "Fortress of Song". The hauntingly gorgeous theme is continuously repeated and provides a foundation for the talented band to showcase their creativity over, eventually climaxing with an intense guitar solo by Jesse Lewis, brilliantly mixed to be an equal voice in the band. Overall, outstanding players and solid compositions make for a great album."
A step forward in music

"All too often, I find myself purchasing jazz albums from "up-and-coming" talent, only to be - on the whole - unimpressed. What actually impressed me after I purchased this album, was the innovative writing as well as the group effort and synergy that is readily apparent when listening to the music on this album. I am, at heart, an appreciator of "traditional" jazz from swing to bebop as well as more modern fusion and post-bop, and - despite my reticence to step outside the "classic" repertoire that assures the utmost of musical quality (think John Coltrane or Keirth Jarrett among many) - the music found in this album represents a cohesive understanding and representation of music that has come before, and a creative, yet extremely enjoyable and tasteful step forward in a genre of music that was originally founded by - or based - upon the creative impulse. After many listens, I still feel that this album is simply a quality piece of work that will leave any person who takes a chance on a new artist, pleasantly surprised and deeply rewarded. As I believe that the level of creativity in this endeavor is on par with the original work of artists that founded the movement of jazz, it should go without saying that one could probably listen to each track and find something new and "fresh" during every listening. Despite an effort not to sound cliché I feel compelled to warn anyone else who buys this album to look for "big things" from this trumpeter in the future."
Fresh, imaginative and brilliant

"I bought Suresh' classical CD when it first became available and I was blown away by technical ability and his truth to the music. Now, with "Lost In New York" I hear the jazz side and the creativity of his own sound. It's a fresh, imaginative and brilliantly composed and played recording, and as a fellow trumpeter I can attest that it's music at the highest level. I see a big career in the chameleonic player and composer. I look forward to whatever comes next!"
