"A 1987 date for the Evidence label seemed unassuming enough, really. Waldron played two Thelonious Monk selections ("Evidence" and "Let's Call This") and two of his own favorite originals ("What It Is" and "Snake Out"). Steve Lacy on soprano sax really completes these tracks, especially his tenacity on "Snake Out." Waldron does some truly mind blowing readings of the Monk tunes, making this live set absolutely essential. As has been said over and over, Waldron was one of few pianists that understood Monk pieces in ways other pianists failed to see. A wonderfully surprising excursion! Pick up the album today.
