"VARIOUS ARTISTS
THE SUBSTITUTE SOUNDTRACK
I seen this album for 5 dollars at a cd store in town and happened to notice out of the corner of my eye that it had LIL ½ DEAD on it. And upon further inspection I noticed it also had tracks from MACK 10, RAS KASS, THA ROAD DAWGS, & ALLFRUMTHAI. So u know I had to get it, I mean come on wouldn't u with that line up. The only draw back from just looking at it is that it only had 11 tracks.
1.HOO BANGIN'-the first track comes out bumpin with a thumpin beat from ICE CUBE, who is also on the track as a cameo. But the star on this one is the great MACK 10, who of course kills it. His rough flow along with the bass driven beat makes this the perfect choice for a single if the cd had one. This really sounds like it should have been on his classic "FO LIFE" album. Every one out there should get this track some how, it is a great song.5/5
2.LICORICE STIKS-this track follows the example the first one laid down, a hot beat with nice lyrics from the artist. This time it's INTENSE METHOD that holds it down this time, tearing the track. And the beat is by RYTHEM D who crafted an excellent instrumental made for night time cruising. Over all this is a pretty nice track, it gets play in my ride.4/5
3.DANGER-Mack 10 returns to help out in the track, but it's the ROAD DAWGS and ALLFRUMTHAI that control this song. Each member of the groups come hard with their verses, especially with the hook. BINKY comes with the beat on this one, to be honest with you I really don't bump this track as much. But to its credit it definitely has that hardcore west coast feel to it, which makes a pretty good track. For some reason it reminds me of "MURDER WAS THE CASE".4/5
4.MIAMI LIFE-finally I get to the RAS KASS track, which I already had once owned before my "SOUL ON ICE" album got stolen. So it was good to hear this track again, I always had a soft spot for this track. the unique beat from FLIP and Kass always seemed tight to me, in fact the production on that album was not as bad as most people say. And you all know that lyrically this track is nice, Ras always comes correct with that. So over all this is an excellent track.4.8/5
5.BRING IT ON-now this catchy yet eerie sounding track comes hard with ORGANIZED KONFUSION in front of and behind the boards. To be honest this is a fav of mine off of the album, the beat is well paced and the lyrics are off the hook. Also the flows from the artists on this track are mad original, or at least for that time period. Over all this is a nice track, worth checking out.4.3/5
6.BANG'EM UP-oh my goodness is that a NO LIMET track from when they were just starting to blow up, I think it is. This is back when almost every thing they dropped was original and a sure fire hit. And that is also very true for this track from TRU [consists of MASTER P, SILK THA SHOCKER, and C MURDER]. The track also features former tank member MR SERV-ON. And to be honest they all come correct, including P. This is when they were real hungry, and egger to get heard. The beat from KLC is very west coast oriented, and the perfect backdrop for these N.O. Soilders.4/5
7.HEAD UP-another west coast track for all of you out there to chill to. This track comes from the YOUNG MURDER SQUAD, and SH' KILLA. Each one of them comes out tight on this one, this one takes me back. The beat from PRODEJE and TAMIE MUNDY is off the hook, it reminds me of the wests hey day in the early 90's {of course this did come out in 96}.4.5/5
8.I GOT THAT CREAM-Master P returns with another west coast influenced track, courtesy of MO B. DICK with his nice production. Of course this was when P was known as the ice cream man, and this was when they first started getting big. This track like the first N.O. track is tight and worth you checking it out. This track is smoother than the last track, and sounds tight in the ride.4/5
9.HOOD LIFE-ah yes the song I bought the album for, LIL ½ DEAD is in the house ya'll. Of course this track didn't disappoint at all, and like I figured is my favorite track on the cd. If the Mack 10 song wasn't the single, this should have been. H.D. drops heat on this track, and makes wish he would drop another album. Also the beat from TRACY S. KENDRICK, COURTNEY BRANCH, & K PHIX is off the chain, although to some it might sound familiar to another west coast hit, see for your self. This is definitely the best song on the album.5/5
10.MONEY, POWER, & WOMEN-this is definitely a highlight of the album, the beat from "gasp" FREDWRECK is off the hook. I couldn't believe Fredwreck was on here, he definitely crafted a classic instrumental on this one. The beat is very smooth and perfect for a lil night time ride. And G SPOT GEEZ come more than correct on here with the lyrics, each verse fits the beat to a t, and the hook is great. I'll have to give this a...5/5
11.ALL OF PUERTO RICO-ok I guess the album had to have the up beat bouncy happy track, it seems every cd has at least one. To its credit JAY and the artist were successful in creating a nice beat, even the hook is tolerable. But the verses from AFRO RICAN are not the greatest verses to be recorded by a long shot, but they do move nicely along with the beat.3.8/5
Over all this a pretty strong album each track is good 2 great depending on your taste, so I recommend this cd to all readers out there.

"For Hip Hop, R&B lovers, this CD is a nice addition to your collection. I had the CD back in 1996, but it was lost. I am buying it again because I have been unable to find anywhere."
What's that song?
