CD Reviews

Solid: Styles Usual Effort

"Here is an actual review for the talented Styles, not just another quick comment. Basically SP brings us another quality album. Unfortunately though, the flaws include somewhat of a limited subject manner, two very average tracks ("Leg's Go" feat. Ray J & "Holiday" feat. Max B) both with horrid choruses. Also the skits aren't bad, but they're still skits (kind of pointless, no replay value). Moving on, the production is a B+ and Styles brings his heavy delivery, quality lyrics, street knowledge, and swagger. He is aided on the mic by several good guest appearances also. The only way you will not like this album is if you don't feel Styles as an artist. Otherwise it's pretty impressive.

"Styles P has shown the most consistency out of all The Lox and he keeps that moving with this release. The first single Blow Your Mind(feat Swizz Beatz) is an updated version of Good Times(I Get High) but a lot better. Alone In The Street and Shoot N***** are pretty good tracks too. All I Know Is Pain is fire. Styles P's rhymes well over a dark beat provided by the HUGELY underrated Alchemist. Akon makes an appearance on Got My Eyes On You-- a track where Styles P explains to those would-be gangstas that he's watching them. Styles P's cocksureness on the mic is well evidenced in tracks like Da 80s, Super Gangsta and Shoot N*****. There are some pretty dope collabos on here too. Ghostface contributes a hype verse on Star Of The State. U Aint Ready 4 Me feat Beanie Sigel is the hardest collabo I've heard all year and that track is also on Beanie Sigel's The Solution(cop it). No Styles P album is complete without Sheek and Jadakiss and they show up on the dope Gangsta Gangsta. There are some flaws on this album. Let's Go feat Ray J is a complete mismatch and boy does it show. Green Piece Of Paper is ehhh and the Tron-sounding Look At Her is corny as hell. There are tight tracks that have bad guest appearances too. Holiday(feat Max B) is tight but Max B doesnt do the hook justice. In It To Win It is tight also but Bully's appearance was weak. The album does end with a great track, the conscious Cause I'm Black feat Black Thought. Bottom Line: While the album title sounds it was concieved on the spot, this album sounded like it was taken time to make and it pays off. Styles P's wordplay was great, the production was sick and and the guest appearances(with three exceptions) were on point too. This is Styles P's best work to date until he makes another album that tops this one. Standout Tracks: ALONE IN THE STREET, SHOOT N*****, ALL I KNOW IS PAIN, GOT MY EYES ON YOU, DA 80s, SUPER GANGSTER, STAR OF THE STATE, U AINT READY 4 ME and CAUSE IM BLACK."
