Amazon.comA much earlier edition of the Galimir Quartet, which had only first violinist Felix Galimir in common with this ensemble, recorded the Ravel Quartet on 78s with the composer's approval. This was, I believe, Galimir's last recording. Joined by considerably younger colleagues, he leads performances of both quartets that demonstrate great identification with the music along with superb technical command. There are other great recordings of these Quartets, of course, but none with greater color and atmosphere than these. They are, in effect, historic performances recorded in modern digital sound, a combination that benefits the music greatly. --Leslie Gerber
