Amazon.comThe Vegh Quartet made notable recordings of Beethoven and Bartók quartets, and not much else, during its long career. This excellent mono recording was made from a 1961 Salzburg broadcast concert, and contains the entire program. The Veghs Quartet's Beethoven is a known quantity, but its Haydn is just as well played and the performances emphasize the similarities between the two pieces, producing a very interesting listening experience. The Debussy is as powerful a performance as you'll ever hear--not all half tones and shading. Any chamber music lover who doesn't insist on digital stereo will find this disc greatly rewarding. --Leslie Gerber
