CD Reviews

Little Known and Even Less Appreciated
Kurt Harding | Boerne TX | 05/30/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"You could say that the Strawbs were unfortunate victims of changing tastes. They rode fairly high in the early seventies only to be buried in a landslide of punk and disco as the decade closed. Led by musical genius David Cousins, the group issued a string of mostly excellent albums until record company support began to slip away. A few mediocre releases that sold poorly didn't help their cause any and the band faded away with hardly a whimper when the record company basically called it quits on them in the middle of recording the very decent album released today as Heartbreak Hill.

Anyone who was a fan of the Strawbs back in the day will want to own this one. Even though it is little known and even less appreciated, there is a lot to like here. My favorites are the Marillion-like Something For Nothing (both versions), the rocking We Can Make It Together (sounds like "we got naked together", I had to check the song title) and the excellent hard-driving title cut. Even though a couple of songs are a little MOR for my tastes, there is still enough good music to propel this to the four-star level.

Today, technology and a new dispensation in the music business has made it possible for niche musicians to bypass the major record companies and to get their music out to the people who want to hear it. Dave Cousins and the Strawbs never really went away, they were just temporarily smothered. Not only have they been making great new records, they have been remastering and rereleasing all the old ones. Get this and hear what you missed!"
