Great sonics but somewhat uninspired readings

"These are live performances by the Royal Concertgebouw from 204-05, and like the other issues on the RCO house label, the hybrid SACD sonics are impressive: mellow, sweet in the high range, and full of detail. For that reason alone, admirers of the orchestra may want these fairly routine readings of two Russian staples. I own and admire Jansons' earlier Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances on EMI, but the passage of a decade has brought undue refinement and fussy detail along with a loss of energy and vitality. The swooning third movement, which is first cousin to both Korngold and Hollywood, comes off best. The Petrushka (another remake for Jansons) is quite tepid, with slow tempos and slack rhythms.
Throughout these performances I kept marveling at the Concertgebouw's gorgeous sound and impedcable execution, but I've come to wonder if Jansons' health problems--he tok a long time to recover from a massive heart attack while conductor of the Pittsburgh SO--turned him into such an unadventurous conductor. In any event, if you want ultra-suave readings of these two works, this is the CD for you."
