Product DescriptionThis important composition written between 1911 and 1913 by Igor Stravinsky was based upon a vision he had while writing another piece: "I saw in imagination a solemn pagan rite: wise elders, seated in a circle, watching a young girl dancing herself to death. They were sacrificing her to propitiate the god of spring". The first performance of this work at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees in Paris provoked one of the most famous riots in musical history. This performance of the Rite of Spring was made in Chicago's Medinah during three sessions on May 14, 1974. Conducted by the world renowned Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony, this recording captures the mood and essence that Stravinksy originally intended. Feel the sound of Stravinsky's Russia and her past on this very special XRCD24.
