"[The CD under consideration is RST 91627]
Sticks McGhee was born in Knoxville, TN, in 1918 and died in NYC in 1961 of cancer. He was the brother of Brownie McGhee, who occasionally teamed up with him. He had a big hit on Atlantic in 1949, DRINKIN' WINE SPO-DEE-O-DE, a tune he had recorded two years earlier for Harlem that went nowhere. Both versions are on this CD. The CD pretty much goes right down McGhee's discography and gives us the first 22 titles he recorded, most of them for Atlantic. Some of the transfers are rather scratchy; three are instrumentals (they are not among the better sides). McGhee also recorded for King in 1953 (excellent sides, heavy with saxes and trumpet), and one of his very best sides is his last, made for Herald (45 rpm) in 1960, MONEY FEVER, which really jumps. Sticks was an excellent singer; I just wish cleaner transfers could have been found/used to make this CD."
