"Steve Lacy displays his mastery of the soprano sax as well as his ability to sustain coherence and substance in a solo setting. This historic recording documents Lacy's first solo concert in the States in 1976, at a time when the solo format was rarely attempted. His compositions support his ability to build on motifs, sometimes simple phrases, as he explores each nuance of tone, attack and color. The recording is quite clean considering it came from a cassette machine, with occassional noises near the mic. Somehow that adds to its charm, placing the listener in the ambience of a typical 70s loft-jazz show. Sometimes meditative, sometimes funny, Lacy was in top form."
