His rockier side circa the 1980s

(3 out of 5 stars)
"Back in 1991, Sparrow Records simultaneously released Doing my Best, Volume 1 (primarily softer, adult contemporary "radio hits") and this release (which had more uptempo fare and a few things that were closer to "rock" for Steve). While there's since been a 2 CD release "The Steve Camp Collection" (ASIN B000002UEM), this one has a lot more tracks that didn't find their way onto that one than Volume 1 did. (Possibly because only 7 of these actually made the Christian radio charts...)
PROS:
- 2 of Steve's best tracks ever appear here but NOT on the "Steve Camp Collection", 1983's "Squeeze" from FIRE AND ICE and 1989's "Playing Marbles with Diamonds" from the classic JUSTICE.
CONS:
- A lot of Steve's best material was ballads and only 4 are here (of which only 2 are great)
- Of the 6 tracks appearing here and NOT on "Steve Camp Collection", only the 2 mentioned in pros are great. "Even Now","Help is on the Way","The Church is All of You" and "I Believe in You" really aren't among Camp's best output.
BOTTOM LINE:
You can get "Playing Marbles with Diamonds" on JUSTICE (which is Camp's finest album overall and one you really SHOULD own anyway). The only great track not on the "Steve Camp Collection" (ASIN B000002UEM) is "Squeeze"...if that's your favourite Camp track ever, get this. Otherwise, spend the extra cash to get "Collection" used and have a much better purchase."
