"I picked up this CD based on my familiarity of the band name only. Never heard their music at all before this. I was blessed after just a listen or two, to realize this was a great & favorite new band! Starling is a Canadian band that has some great songs pretty much in the 70's /alt/rock/pop style. I hear a lot of the synthesizer sound from the 70's in here & the songs are all infectious to sing along with! The lyrics are great with a lot of excellent rhyming wordplay & phrasing that I don't see too often. All in all, it's a great CD!"
Better every time I play it

"I was at a Tragically Hip concert with *seven* opening acts, suffering through one mediocre act after another. Then a band called Starling came on, and hey! They were really good! When I saw their cd, something told me I had to have it.
The first time I played the disc, I was disappointed to find only a few good songs, so I put it aside for a while. Then one day I listened to it again.
I have to wonder what was wrong with my ears the first time I played it.
There is not a single bad song on this album. Most of the tracks are extremely good, and some are absolutely amazing (Superfrayed, Don't Deflate...). A prime example of Canadian alt/power-pop; lots of energy, catchy hooks, solid lyrics.
Although it's not my favourite track, this line from 'Delusional' is one of my all-time favourite song quotes:
"Please, notice me, I'm around, and I'm relatively grounded.
Okay, at least say to me that that wasn't as pathetic as it sounded."
The music is simple and energetic, and the lyrics are real and believable. This album is something fewer and fewer popular music acts are these days-- genuine, without losing its sense of fun."
Brilliant

"Less than a week ago I went to a Veruca Salt concert. These guys were the opening band and their performance rocked. So I picked up a cd not knowing what to fully expect. Even though it was about 2 'o clock when I got home I put in the cd and fell in love I haven't listened to much else than this cd. . . I suggest you pick up one and fall in love with the music and the guys (They are too sweet!) Or just the music. But you can find different beats in this cd which is good when you're in a good or bad mood...JUST BUY IT!"
Definately Ahead of their Time...

"Simple Plan, Good Charolette, Yellowcard, Sum 41 and the rest were the band for their times. Starling has to be the leader of this group. They sucked when this album was released because they were ahead of their time. Pull this cd out of your archives and pop it in now and you'll find its better now. Now that the semi off tone voices and unique guitar melodys have finally made it into your musical taste. Starling is really better now. Even though its the same album. Also check out their other CD, Things You Should Have Said Before, Available at maplemusic.com"

"On "Sustainer", Canadian alt-popsters Starling have the hooks and melodies that most bands spend a lifetime trying to find. Standout tracks include "Don't Deflate", "Superfrayed", "Everything in the World", and "Best Behaviour".Multi-talented Danny Michel also has a successful solo career, with critically acclaimed solo releases. Check out his site.Sustainer is a great CD, eclipsed only by their energetic and witty live show."
