CD ReviewsHow can people compare this to Hybrid technophile4 | 12/06/2002 (1 out of 5 stars) "I purchased this album after reading reviews on amazon.co.uk that compared this album to HYBRID thinking that I was up for more sophisticated breakbeat. I was sorely disappointed. I found the beats okay and the previous reviews are correct in that the production is good... it's just that the basslines are a really drab and the lyrics at times are painful. I had to sell it within a few days of buying it because it placed an icky dent in my music collection.I just found that the comparison to HYBRID was unwarranted and may have set my expectations too high. If you're looking for good cruisy breaks then head towards anything on the distinctive label like HYBRID, WAY OUT WEST & the Y3K series." Yeah, if you liked Deepsky.... terryut | Murrieta, CA United States | 01/15/2003 (4 out of 5 stars) "Starecase is made up of producers Paul Crossman and Al Watson, one of which is a solo artist/ dj called General Midi. Their CD can be described more as a brilliantly produced and programmed rather than being noted for great songwriting. What they lack in musical/ lyrical content can be made up for in their masterful experimental production. Then, I guess they should be compared more to the duo that is Deepsky. The one track with great lyrics and great programming is their first single "Faith." The other 8 tracks sway between 4-to-the-floor dance tracks and experimentally chilled break-beat compositions. It may get repetitive, but the concept and feel in some of the tracks is just right. "Come In" is my favorite. The bass is very inventive, and the mood of the track is very deep. But, some less than effective lyrics repeat their way through "See."I really can't see how someone could really compare this release to Hybrid's "Wide Angle." But if you enjoy the experimental music that can be found on Kinetic Records and Hope Recordings there are a good handful of tracks on this disc that might keep you satisfied." Tight production N. Fisher | East Coast United States | 07/18/2002 (4 out of 5 stars) "If you like Hybrid or Max Graham, you should be
satisfied with Starecase. The first track, the CD's single, is a throbbing, tight track with a GREAT female vocal. Tracks 1-5 and 7 are all excellent. Track 7 is not a dance track at all, rather a melodic chill-out. Track 3 would be my favorite, with rolling deep bass, a funky tech line and similar phat female vocals. The only thing that detracts from this being a full on five star album is the vocals on track 6... I ask myself time and time again why dance producers even think about using cheesy male vocals. Featuring lyrics such as:"Deep inside of me... There's a psychadelic sea"Eeeeek. Come on man. Disregard track 6 and you've got a solid album from one of my personal favorites in the dance production scene. Crank this one up." |
