"I saw Stanley live when he was touring with the Heath Brothers back in the early 80's. He had so many things going on with both left and right hands that I lost track. He is an extremely underrated piano player. This disk is a chance to hear one of the masters stretch. A wonderful blend of the cerebral combined with swing."
A pianistic love affair

"Stanley Cowell was a freshman at Scott High School (Toledo, Ohio) when I knew him. He was a diminutive kid, but when he sat down to the piano, everyone was in total awe of his abilities.
Many years later, Stanley sat down on a piano bench at Maybeck Recital Hall, Berkeley, California, and has coaxed sounds out of his piano that simply amaze the listener. He is a mature musician who has paid his dues playing for lounges, and who was one of the mainstays of the Heath Brothers (an off shoot of the Modern Jazz Quartet years). His craft is strong and determined, his improvisations are absolutely delicious. He is a major jazz pianist with a mind toward including his own ideas and seasonings in some of the great standards of popular music. I have listened to this disc over and over...the sound is full and satisfying. The musicianship is the best.....Stanley Cowell, you've come a long way from Scott High School in Toledo, Ohio, and you're magnificent. This is a first rate example of huge, important talent in today's world of jazz."
