Synopsis

This 12-song compilation serves as a useful, if a little slight, introduction to the sacred recordings of Carter and Ralph Stanley. Culled from their late-1950s and early-1960s tenure on King Records, the set wisely includes a number of lesser-known songs (the ebullient "My Lord's Gonna Set Me Free," the austere "Purple Robe," the cautionary "Seek Jesus") along with age-old standards ("Working on a Building") and a number of tunes popularized by Bill Monroe ("Wicked Path of Sin," the title track). With harmonies that glow with warmth, honesty, and conviction, the Stanley Brothers represent bluegrass gospel utopia. --Marc Greilsamer

"I have 11 of the Stanley Brothers gospel CD's and they are
all great, but this CD is the best. Nobody sings mountain gospel
like the Stanley Brothers. Their harmonies and bluegrass picking
will send shivers down your spine. Their music is bright, clean,
emotion filled and powerful. After listening to them 40 years,
I never get tired of their songs. Buy it and enjoy; but be
forewarned, you will be getting their other gospel CD's."
