Product DescriptionWith the notable exception of Ray Starling, the guys who had to play the mellophoniums complained it was a bastard instrument, impossible to play in tune, and was too loud in comparison with the pure, sweet sound of the French horns they were replacing. But fans for the most part agreed that mellophoniums brought a fresh, distinctive sound to the band, and that their faster response and ability to shout was more suited to the orchestra than the softer, subtle French horns. Like so many of Stan's finest endeavors, the mellophoniums proved a financial loss but a musical triumph! This CD represents a brief and unforgettable period in the history of the Stan Kenton Orchestra.
