"I didn't know what to expect going into Spirit's Clear album. I'm a bit surprised much of the focus is simply on rocking out in addition to featuring some pretty good songwriting.
Who in the world is the guitar player in this band? "Dark Eyed Woman" has a WONDERFUL guitar solo. It's played tastefully and melodically, just the way I like them.
"Apple Orchard" has some funny lyrics about a persons daughter, and contains more of that splendid guitar playing. This is a nice example of late 60's blues/hard rock.
It's impossible to hate a song like "So Little Time to Fly". I believe NOT finding it memorable the first time you hear it is impossible as well. It's that good.
"Cold Wind" and "Give a Life, Take a Life" are beautifully performed ballads. Supposedly this album was rushed a bit by the band members, but upon hearing these two songs, you'd be surprised if there's any truth to that.
"Ice" is, without a DOUBT, my favorite song here. The eerily quiet flute build-up, the jazzy guitar jam in the middle, and the atmosphere... my goodness, what an atmosphere. Actually that guitar playing reminds me of Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan" quite a bit. Perhaps Sabbath were fans of this band? Hey, we know Led Zeppelin were.
Overall, this is a classic example of late 60's rock perfection. A must own."
