Synopsis

Album Description
Two of country music's most admired and innovative musicians. Bryant had dazzling technique mixed clean picking and raw genius. Speedy could play sweetly and melodically, but explosive flamboyance was his trademark. This 4 CD collection includes West and Bryant's complete recordings for Capitol from 1950 through 1956 and both Speedy's post-Bryant solo LPs for Capitol. But it goes further, featuring the first known recordings each man made as an accompanist and an entire disc sampling their rich and varied career as Los Angeles studio musicians, accompanying everyone from Tennessee Ernie Ford and Kay Starr to Spike Jones, Jean Shepard, Bing Crosby and Ella Mae Morse, from straightahead country to big band jazz.

CD Reviews

STUNNING!
scott gilmer ernest | burbank, ca United States | 03/23/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you've ever heard this flooring duo and felt like you wanted more, this is the place to get it. Over 4 hours of killer instrumental country/jazz/swing. Nobody has ever done it better and hopefully nobody is trying to outdo these two partners in speed and taste. They have an uncanny chemistry between their 2 instruments. This isn't just about technique and flash. There's some beautiful music here. Excellent for parties, driving or just plain listening to music that sounds like it's from the western side of outer space. The book included is stunning in it's detail and research. Everything you could ever want to hear, and read, about Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant. Yet when it's over, you keep wanting more."
A must for West & Bryant completests
The Delite Rancher | Phoenix, Arizona | 07/19/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"If you agree with me that nobody ripped it up quite like Jimmy Bryant & Speedy West, "Flamin' Guitars" is a must have. I started out with the Bryant & West starter kit "Stratosphere Boogie: The Flaming guitars Of Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant" and was so amazed that I wanted my ears to listen to everything by these telepathic geniuses. While "Stratosphere Boogie" has most of the best songs off this box set, the completest will want "Flamin' Guitars." Compared to the one disc compilations, these four discs feature an unusual variety of music ranging from Jazz and Country to Rock, Hawaiian and Swing. Like the cheesy Hawaiian music, some of the material is otherwise out-of-print and for good reason. As with everything on the Bear Family label, this box set is well done and very expensive -at the time of review it was going for $100.00. Other than the price, the only complaint I have is the blurry photo on the cover of the box. How hard was it to find a picture of the boys that was actually in focus? While it's really about the music and not the pictures, it does come with a handsome booklet. "Flamin' Guitars" may be a significant investment, but a good one for the guitar aficionado."
Hillbilly Jazz at its Best
Charles E. Baty | Davis, CA United States | 02/01/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a chronological compilation and the first 5 tunes (available for listening) are unfortunately the worst. Track 6, Bryant's Boogie, is an incredible 12-bar hillbilly jazz foray that never fails to amaze. The collaboration of Jimmy Bryant and Speedy West provided some great instrumentals and flashy improvisations that still hold up today. This compilation includes all their hits and lots of great surprises, like 'China Boy' and 'Lover', along with guest appearances with Tennessee Ernie Ford and other country greats. A must-have collection for any aspiring hillbilly/country swing guitarist."
