"Some of the musicians in this recording play also for the Folger Consort; this CD shows another side of their musical personality. The opening "vesame y abrazame" shows an amazing technique and musicality on the part of the recorder players. You won't find anything better anywhere. Many songs were originally written for more than one voice. In this recording they are arranged for guitar, viola da gamba, recorders and one female singer; you will find the versions of Cucú and Hermosa Catalina very nice and refreshing. My personal favorites are the last three songs: Clarines Suaves, Oygan Una Xacarilla, and Oy Sube Arrebatada. Clarines suaves makes a nice introduction to the music of Raphael Antonio Castellanos, one of the best musicians of his time."
