Synopsis
Album Description 2007 debut studio album by a group composed (as some might suspect) of former members of Hawkwind: Nik Turner, Terry Ollis, Dave Anderson, Thomas Crimble and Mick Slattery. Space Ritual arises like a phoenix from Hawkwind's ashes with this stunning album of original material that takes the ground-breaking music into a new dimension that is both contemporary but keenly aware of it's heritage and roots. The lyrics feature poems penned by Sci-fi author Michael Moorcock. One reviewer who was privileged to hear these sessions prior to their release remarked that the sound was 'more Hawkwind than Hawkwind'. However, this band's sound is light years beyond their former incarnation, forging their own style and future. |
CD ReviewsHawkwind is back Daniel Leithauser | Grand Junction, CO USA | 12/18/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "As one official review indicated, "more Hawkwind than Hawkwind". And it is. Space Ritual is the culmination of decades of playing psychedelic electronic space music. Clean analog and digital mix with some of the story telling of Moorcock thrown in. This is a blend of the old stuff ("Space Ritual"--how telling!) and the new stuff (Quark Strangeness and Charm, marking less space and more pop than prior stuff) creating a must have for Hawkwind fans young and old, along with attracting those that have not even heard of these folks. Since I am in a nostalgic retroactive mode right now, converting old vinyl to digital, I found that much of the older Hawkwind is already on disk and sounding cleaner than ever with some remixing. Notably, the first album (simply Hawkwind) and Space Ritual (one of the best live space rock albums ever recorded) are well worth picking up in addition to Otherworld as a rambling time line of what Hawkwind, and lovingly currently reconstituted, Space Ritual are all about!" A must have for every Space Rocker!!!
