"A friend of mine that spends more time in the used record store than he does sleeping, told me about Southeast Engine. He's the only person I know that listens to more music than I do. He made me go to a show in Dayton. Told me I'd be blown away. I was.



I hate trying to describe music or put it into a category. As another reviewer mentioned, this album can not really be categorized. All I can tell you is, once I heard it, my first thought was 'this is what I've been looking for since I was 16'. I can't compare them to any one band. Maybe similar to some "indie" bands, but not really. I've been largely disappointed by hyped "indie" bands like Wilco because it seems like they try TOO hard to be different. Don't get me wrong, Wilco is a great band, but the music just gets weird sometimes. It can feel forced. On the contrary, there is an honesty and flow to this band and this album that rings true.



What I looked for in rock, classic rock, alternative, classic country, emo, alt-country, indie, pop, I found in SE Engine. Maybe that's why this band is so great. They seem to be able to touch on all of them. The album reflects this diversity. Each song can stand on it's own. It's not repetitive and it's not boring. Moods change, tempos change, styles change, instruments change, but the quality and passion are always there. Great song writing, great arrangements, great musicianship, great vocals. Bottom line, it's music, and it's about as good as it gets.



Do yourself a favor. Buy this CD. Then go to one of their high energy live shows while they are still in small venues. Because like my record-store-junky friend said, "These guys are going to be big!" (The only time he's ever told me that about a band) And if for some reason they don't make it in our Clear Channel, MTV world of music, you'll be sad that you missed it."
