Quite Representative...but needs a supplemental disc

"Here is probably what can be seen as a `definite' best of Sousa disc. And a very good one at that, but with certain reservations about the "Stars and Stripes", which to me sounds a tad too ceremonious, without any zest. Gunther Schuller conducts a wonderful "Stars and Stripes" on the Sony disc "Footlifters". But for the majority of the interpretations, this is a perfectly legitimate collection: "Manhatten Beach", "Washington Post", and "Liberty Bell" are all done well.
I give this a warm four stars: one less for the lukewarm "Stars and Stripes".
Nothing to be ashamed of, but supplement it with "Fennell conducts Sousa". With this and that, you'll be armed with all the Sousa you'll need."
