CD Reviews

A Solid Collection with Something For Everyone.

"Mini-review: Before you ask, no, I've never seen an episode of Gossip Girl. I hear that it's a halfway decent show, but the title itself just sort of throws me off and makes me think of a post-millennium Beverly Hills 90210. Oh wait. Nevermind. The bottom line is that I'm currently inundated with far too many quality shows to watch, be it LOST, Heroes, How I Met Your Mother, or Pushing Daisies. But with a soundtrack this varied, this enthusiastically different, Gossip Girl may be the next show that I add to my DVR.

In 49 minutes, OMFGG takes the listener on a musical roller coaster that features such varied genres as indie pop, rock, dance, and straight-up techno. The Kills' "Sour Cherry" starts things off on a high note, with a percussion-driven dance rock groove that gets you makes you feel like you should be busting out of the doors of your high school in slow-motion with your trendy clothes and aviators on. Phantom Planet's "Do the Panic" is equally as awesome, with a chorus that will have even the most hardened hip-hop fan singing emphatically by the last time it comes around.

Other highlights include "Got Your Number" by Nadia Oh, which starts off slightly annoying and ends up slightly endearing, or Crystal Castles' entrancing "Crimewave." There are appearances from this year's almost-"it" band, The Ting Tings and The Strokes' Albert Hammond Jr. as well. In all honesty, there's something for everyone - as cliche as that may seem. It won't exactly elicit the same reaction as a party as, say The Jackson 5 would, but you could certainly do much worse. Aside from a few tracks that most will feel compelled to skip (The Teenagers and The Virgins, specifically) OMFGG is a fairly solid soundtrack in a world where most soundtracks aren't worth anyone's time. As far as watching the show goes, I'll probably continue to avoid it. For now, I can get my hipster music from Chuck, which is more my style anyway.

Key Tracks:

1. "Sour Cherry" - The Kills

2. "Do You Wanna" - The Kooks

3. "Do the Panic" - Phantom Planet

4. "Crimewave" - Crystal Castles

5. "We Started Nothing" - The Ting Tings

Could have been WAY better...

"...when you think of all the great songs and bands heard on Season 1.I'm totally hooked on the show and have it on DVD,so I had to buy the CD just for the sake of having it.But it feels like someting's missing.12 Tracks isn't enough at all when you think that the OMFGG version sold on Itunes contains 15 (what happened?!...).And most of the tracks aren't the key ones of the season to.Not a single song from the pilot is on the CD as there should have been one, aside from "hard to live in the city","the gift" or "bounce with me" for example.Maybe number 2 will be as good as the one from the O.C,but don't let us wait too long please...

1) "sour cherry" isn't my favorite from the CD or THE KILLS but it's a good choice for the opening. 4/5

2) "do you wanna" is one the best KOOKS song and it totally stick with the spirit of the show and it characters. 5/5

3) "do the panic",as usual PHANTOM PLANET is at it best.Good choice for the show itself,it sums up a couple of subjects from it. 5/5

4) "feeling better" same as track 3 and I didn't knew the song until then. 5/5

5) "one week of danger" (demo version),the only song which stuck with me when I first saw "seventeen candles",really good song, plus the album version is even better. 5/5

6) "got your number",I love the song, but I don't know why, cause it's your average pop song you hear all over the radio and get easily annoyed by.But it's perfect here and the (gossip)girls point of view on men. 5/5

7) "crimewave",my least fav track,it has everything I hate about techno. 3/5

8) "fight song", one of the best song from THE REPUBLIC TIGERS and a perfect choice for the soundtrack. 5/5

9) "cities in dust",very good cover, perfect beat and voice,it makes you wanna dance, love it. 5/5

10) "we started nothing",same as track 9,just love THE TING TINGS. 4.5/5

11) "breakfast in NYC",welcome to Vanessa's coffee shop, really sweet little song,it had to be on the CD. 5/5

12) "three wishes",the only real love song from OMFGG,beautiful voice, music and lyrics.fans of the show should really give a try to THE PIERCES new album "thirteen tales of love and revenge". 5/5

It all stared with raw beats so it ended up with soft and melancolic melodies, what more do you want? Plus all songs are echoing the show's storyline and itself.Like I said,it's way too short and more tracks would have been good, but I may be wrong...

P.S: the booklet and it artwork are really nice, love the colors and the pictures, good work...
