Synopsis

Album Description
Redwood Recordings specializes in indie artists that don't fit the mainstream. While "alternative" is a label that used to be used, and is still the closest we can come to analyzing our place in the world, we do not fit in with what is called "alternative" by the mainstream. Our artists (Tony Moffeit, Sam Schraeger, and Soos) simply play great music that comes from the heart and explores the power of the heart.

CD Reviews

Surreal train & a conjure moon

(5 out of 5 stars)

"this surreal train conjures up memories of the surrealist poet robert desnos who died from being in a concentration camp in world war II. on his body was found a poem with the refrain "i have dreamed of you so much." two songs on this cd bring back the haunting feeling of this surreal poet and his poem. the first song from train of love which i recommend a listen is "no souvenirs." no souvenirs is a chant, an incantation, a song which conjures a seance. again, it reminds me of desnos, because desnos was famous among the surrealists for being able to sleep almost at will, dream, and compose his dream poems. this song is a dream song. the train of love is rolling down some voodoo tracks. on the train is the outlaw gambler with his lover. they peek through the blinds and see the sun coming up, washing over the land, giving life, giving birth. the song is embryonic. the sun gives birth to the land, the child is growing in the mother, the dream poem defeats death. then contrast this song with "back here with the blues." desnos also had a bluesy feeling in his poetry, and rich soos captures the real feel of the blues in his vocals and guitar work. hey, his baby's gone, and he's back here with the blues. the song conjures juke joints in the backwoods of louisiana. the train of love has gone gutbucket. robert johnson and howlin wolf are seen reflected in the mirrors of the rails. the blues are moanin through the trees and the sky is charged with smokestack lightning. give a listen to these two songs for a haunting experience."
